After sitting in the Womb Chair, I could immediately tell that this furniture was designed with ultimate comfort and style in mind. From its plush cushions to its comfy support structure, it felt like lounging on a cloud!

Eero Saarinen’s iconic 1946 womb chair was born from a creative challenge by Florence Knoll, who asked him to design something “like a basket full of pillows.” But the chair’s sculptural shape – resembling that of an inviting womb – made this modernist masterpiece instantly recognizable. And as if its eloquent form wasn’t enough, Saarinen remarked on the deeper purpose behind his creation: providing security and comfort to those still longing for their lost sense of maternal embrace—achieving harmony between man and nature in doing so.

I had the opportunity to experience this piece of furniture, which has impacted modern design for over 70 years.  After testing it out, I can confidently say this revolutionary seating solution is well worth its reputation. Here are my thoughts on the womb chair.

Is the Womb Chair Comfortable?

The womb chair is unquestionably a very comfortable piece of furniture. It has an ergonomically designed shape that provides superior support and comfort to the user. As I sit, the chair’s soft, rounded curves create a cocoon-like effect, enveloping me in a comforting embrace. The backrest’s height and angle provide optimal lumbar support, and the armrests are perfectly proportioned to fit my arms while providing stability.

Additionally, the plush cushions are filled with high-density foam padding that is firm and supportive while remaining pliable enough to sink into for maximum comfort. As a result, I could use it for extended periods without becoming uncomfortable or straining any part of my body. This chair’s unique design and high-quality craftsmanship make it an excellent choice for those looking for superior comfort in their living space.

Is It Durable?

It’s not easy to find a chair that is both comfortable and durable, but this checked both boxes for me. The womb chair is highly renowned for its exceptional durability, making it an ideal choice for any home or office. It is built using a strong steel frame that is covered with high-quality foam cushioning and then wrapped in soft fabric upholstery for added comfort. This ensures that the chair can easily withstand everyday wear and tear without compromising its stability or longevity.

The solid metal legs are also extremely sturdy, helping to ensure that the chair remains in place even when someone sits down heavily on it. Furthermore, the tightly woven fabric upholstery makes it resistant to rips and tears, making it a great option for those who prefer more robust chairs. All of this makes the womb chair an incredibly durable product that can last in any home or office for many years with minimal maintenance required.

Is It as Good as the Website Claims?

The product experience far exceeded my expectations. While up close and personal with the chair, I was most struck by how snug and homey the rugged-textured fabric felt—and by how well it fit into my space. I didn’t need an ottoman because I couldn’t stop curling up like a pretzel in this angled icon.

As previously stated, I was also surprised by the extra elbow room on the indented armrests, which provided enough space for me to lay my book down (or live on the edge and put my cocktail there).

Is It Suitable for Specific Decor Styles, If So, Which Ones?

The womb chair can be used as an accent piece in more contemporary styles such as minimalism, mid-century modern, Scandinavian, and industrial chic. The curved shape of the chair lends itself to being placed in a corner or along walls without standing out too much, making it an ideal choice for tight spaces or small rooms.

Additionally, its neutral color palette allows it to blend with almost any existing decor scheme. Upholstered in fabric or leather, the womb chair also makes a great addition to traditional decor styles like bohemian and eclectic. With its welcoming curves and comfort factor, this design classic has been popular for decades and is here to stay.

How Much Does It Cost?

The womb chair costs about $3,000 on average, but it can cost anywhere between $2,500 and $4,000. If you’re looking for a long-lasting investment piece of art, this is definitely one to consider. However, if you want a more affordable option, you can purchase a replica. There are excellent womb chair replicas on the market that are both similar to and even superior to the original.

Is it Worth Buying?

The answer to whether the womb chair is worth buying really depends on you and your style preferences. For those who value midcentury modern design, the womb chair provides a timeless style that will never go out of fashion, with its sleek lines and minimal approach to furnishings.

It is also extremely comfortable. The high-quality materials used in its construction are also sure to stand the test of time, making it a worthwhile investment.

Additionally, it comes in a range of colors, so you can find one that fits perfectly with your décor or matches your accent colors. All these factors together make the womb chair an excellent piece for those looking for an attractive, comfortable and durable chair for their home.

Should I Buy the Replica Instead?

If you don’t have the budget to invest in the original design, then a high-quality replica of this iconic piece is a perfect alternative.

The replica versions are made with top-grade materials that closely replicate the original’s look and feel. The outer surface features plush velvet fabric upholstery with button-tufted accents for added comfort and style. Plus, the sculptural steel base gives it a sturdy support so you won’t have to worry about it wobbling or tipping over as you sit on it. It also comes in several colors to choose from, so you can find one that perfectly complements your living space.

Another great thing about purchasing the womb chair replica is its cost-effectiveness. You can get one at a fraction of what you would pay for an original design while still benefiting from its timeless chic style, luxurious comfort, and functional versatility. This makes it a great choice if you’re looking for an affordable way to add some modern flair to your home without breaking the bank. Plus, many online stores offer free shipping so you don’t even have to leave your house to find one!

Overall, buying a quality womb chair replica offers all the benefits of owning an original design at a fraction of the cost – making it an excellent choice for those who want to enjoy both style and comfort without having to spend too much money.
