Top Health Benefits of Drinking Espresso

Espresso is crammed full of good stuff. Here’s a definitive list of the top health benefits of drinking a beautiful cup of espresso:

1. Espresso Can Boost Concentration

Millions of people across the globe rely on espresso to wake them up each day because of its power to boost concentration and stave off tiredness.

The reason that Espresso is so effective is largely due to its high caffeine content. Caffeine is a stimulant that affects the body’s nervous system and in the process enhances focus and concentration.

Caffeine is a natural insecticide that plants produce to protect themselves from insects. Caffeine is incredibly common in a large variety of plants such as coffee beans and tea leaves.

Adenosine is a natural chemical that builds up in our bodies throughout the day to create a feeling of tiredness. Caffeine is incredibly effective at suppressing tiredness as it binds with the Adenosine receptors in the brain preventing the Adenosine from being absorbed thus preventing tiredness.

Studies have shown that a cup of espresso releases chemicals such as caffeine into the blood stream within 20 minutes of the first sip and these chemicals can remain in the blood stream for up to 12 hours.

The caffeine in espresso also triggers the body to release adrenaline which causes the pupils to dilate and vision can actually become sharper. Espresso also increases dopamine levels in the body especially in the areas of the brain linked with attention, in turn boosting focus and concentration.

2. Espresso Can Improve Physical Performance

A cup of espresso shortly before beginning physical exercise can significantly enhance your performance. A key reason for this is because caffeine triggers the release of Adrenaline which puts the body into fight or flight mode limiting pain perception, increasing muscle contraction and boosting heart rate.

Espresso is the perfect way to get your caffeine hit as unlike other drinks containing caffeine espresso contains virtually no calories. Unsweetened and without cream espresso contains approximately one calorie per cup with virtually no carbs or fat.

The point above is really important as so many people drink an energy drink for their caffeine hit before or after exercise, these drinks are often so calorific that they completely negate the positive impact of the exercise itself.

Equally as relevant is that although caffeine is now common in many sugar free energy drinks, these do not have all of the other health benefits offered by espresso such as the huge dose of antioxidants, more on this point later in this list.

3. Espresso Can Improve Digestion

Espresso is rich in caffeine and caffeine is known to have amazing properties that support digestion. Research has shown that Espresso can support healthy regular digestion and here’s why.

Caffeine can act as a mild laxative and is a diuretic which essentially means it makes you want to go to the bathroom. Combined with these two properties caffeine can also help speed up the body’s metabolism. Put all three together and espresso is excellent for supporting regular digestion.

4. Espresso Can Improve Heart Health

Your heart loves espresso as much as you do! Clinical research has found evidence to support a link between regular moderate coffee consumption and a reduced risk of heart failure. The study concluded that moderate coffee consumption could significantly reduce the risk of heart failure.

The study was carried out by researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre and Harvard School of Public Health. You can read the full study here.

The maximum benefit was observed from four cups of coffee consumed daily where the relative risk of heart failure was 11% lower than for those who did not consume coffee on a regular basis at all. No additional benefit was found from consuming more than four cups of coffee daily.

7. Espresso Can Help Weight Loss

Espresso is an excellent aid to weight loss because it helps you exercise harder without taking on any additional calories. The reason espresso is so effective for weight loss is because the natural caffeine content triggers the release of Adrenaline which puts the body in fight or flight mode limiting pain perception, increasing muscle contraction and boosting heart rate.

Espresso is the perfect way to get your caffeine hit as unlike other drinks containing caffeine espresso contains virtually no calories. Unsweetened and without cream espresso contains approximately one calorie per cup with virtually no carbs or fat.

11. Espresso Can Reduce The Risk Of Depression

The caffeine in espresso is a stimulant and helps the brain suppress the hormone adenosine. By suppressing the adenosine you enjoy increased brain activity and hormones such as dopamine are released into the brain.

The increased dopamine helps to improve your mood, boost brain function and increases alertness. Studies have shown that these benefits combined help make caffeine drinkers much less likely to become depressed.

Studies into these benefits have shown that the risk of depression can be reduced by 20% through regular coffee consumption. More startling is that the same study found that regular coffee drinkers within the study were less than half as likely to commit suicide than those who did not drink caffeinated drinks.

15. Espresso Can Improve Oral Health

Whilst we need to watch the effects that coffee can have on the colour of our teeth, espresso is taken in small doses and should not have a significant impact on tooth colour.
