10. Point Break (1991)

Point Break (1991)

Point Break follows Keanu Reeves as an FBI agent hunting a gang of dare devil bank robbers. Keanu’s character Johnny Utah goes undercover as a surfer to get close to the gang led by Patrick Swayze as Bodhi. Johnny finds himself a little too close to the gang and what follows is a tense thrill ride as Johnny battles to reconcile his duty with friendship and love.  

With an all-star cast and non-stop action cleverly interwoven with complex themes of friendship and loyalty Point Break is an excellent action movie and well deserving of a place on our list.

9. Rambo: First Blood (1982)

Rambo: First Blood (1982)

Sylvester Stallone stars as Rambo, a decorated Vietnam veteran who is hounded by police when passing through a small town. Rambo traumatised by war snaps and uses his unique skills to escape leading the police on a wild hunt through the wilderness to capture or kill him. As Rambo battles to survive he is at the same time battling his own past which he is deeply troubled by.

Sylvester Stallone is exceptional and Rambo: First Blood is well worth a watch.

8. Speed (1994)

Speed (1994)

Surprisingly Keanu Reeves features more in our list of the best action movies than any other leading actor. In this outing Keanu plays a bomb disposal expert who is battling to stop a deranged bomber blowing up a bus full of people.

With some of the best set piece action scenes of all time Speed is no doubt one of the cleverest and purest action movies ever made.

7. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)

Mel Gibson returns as Mad Max for the second in the series. Having lost everything Max is now at his most dangerous and vengeful, at the same time Max is now more pragmatic doing what he must to survive.

In the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max, Max represents a glimmer of hope. No longer the straight laced police man. Max has evolved to the world around him making him a significant force to be reckoned with.

In the claustrophobic world of Mad Max 2 the tension is palpable with every moment feeling like a struggle to survive. This is an excellent action film which has stood the test of time and is well deserving of a watch.

6. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

The sequel to a movie that made Arnold Schwarzenegger a worldwide star, Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a non-stop thrill ride. The special effects at the time were ground breaking and impressively still hold up today. Arnie plays a cyborg sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor, played by Linda Hamilton.

Unfortunately Arnie is not all that gets sent back in time. Facing up against Arnie and with the mission of killing Sarah Connor is the formidable T-1000, played by Robert Patrick. What follows is a cat and mouse chase across the US with chaos every time the two machines meet. Nobody could deny that Terminator 2 is one of the greatest action movies ever made.

5. The Matrix (1999)

The Matrix (1999)

Set in a future where machines have enslaved mankind Keanu Reave’s plays the hacker Neo with an ability to change human destiny. With some of the greatest fight scenes of all time and revolutionary special effects The Matrix packs one hell of a punch.

When released The Matrix was ground breaking with its mind-bending storyline supported by career defining performances from an all-star cast, all of which still stands up two decades on. The Matrix is well deserving of a positon in our top ten and comes highly recommended.

4. RoboCop (1987)

RoboCop (1987)

A police officer brutally murdered in the line of duty is brought back to life as part man, part machine. RoboCop played brilliantly by Peter Weller is intended to be unaware of his past and the ultimate answer to crime.

RoboCop does remember however and struggles to reconcile these memories with what he has become. RoboCop is the ultimate crime fighting machine but his human side makes him perhaps even more dangerous as emotions run high.

A groundbreaking futuristic action movie that cleared the way for much of what has followed. Well deserving of a place in our top ten and highly recommended.

3. Predator (1987)

The ultimate story of man verses beast told at the extremes of the possible. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a tough special op’s type leading a crew of elite soldiers into the jungle on a mission. A predator awaits that is different than anything anyone has seen before.

The Predator is from another world and is visiting earth to demonstrate its hunting and survival prowess. As Arnie’s crew unwittingly bump into the predator two deadly forces go head to head. With the predator seemingly invulnerable it falls on Arnie to fight back in typical Hasta la vista fashion!

2. Alien (1979)

The ultimate Alien action movie with Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley. Ellen is one of a crew of humans in space who unwittingly come into contact with Alien life. Excitement turns to horror as it becomes clear this life form is dark, violent and terrifying.

As the crew are gradually dispatched Ellen finds herself in a desperate fight for survival against one of the most hostile creatures imaginable. The tension in palpable as Ellen drips with sweat as she runs, hides and fights for survival.

This is action perfectly interwoven with thrilling tension at its very best. Without a doubt Alien is one of the greatest films ever made in any genre and is highly deserving of such a high place in our top ten.

1. Die Hard (1988) – “Welcome to the party pal!”

Die Hard (1988)

The ultimate suspense, action thriller with amazing performances from Bruce Willis and the late & great Alan Rickman. An American skyscraper is stormed by gun wielding terrorists, or is it? As the attacker’s true purposes become clear only one man can stand in their way. Bruce Willis plays John McClane a policeman visiting his family for Christmas and unwittingly gets caught in the crossfire.

The movie follows the struggle between John and Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman’s character). Hans intent on delivering his plan kills everyone in his path with ruthless efficiency, while John following his instinct to stop “scumbags” can’t help but fight back. While Hans has his elite team of killers behind him and John has the police and FBI on his side this is essentially a battle between two men and everyone else is just in the way.

The action unfolds as bankers attend their annual Christmas party with festive cheer turning into sobering fear. Die Hard is the ultimate man’s Christmas movie with edge of your seat suspense and action. Very deserving of the number one spot on our list and highly recommended.
