Eight Ways to Discover What You Love
1. Figure Out What You Don’t Want
When you have no idea what it is you want from your life, think about what you don’t want and work backwards. Start in broader terms and then get more and more specific. For example you might feel strongly you don’t want to be unhealthy, so from this you know that good health is important to you.
Next drill down further to get gradually more and more specific. In the example above you have established good health is important to you. The next question to ask yourself is what does good health look like? Is it a six pack or is it something else. Keep repeating this process then come up with ideas for things you can do that tap into the areas you have identified as significant to you.
You may well find that your life’s passion lies in those areas that matter most to you.
2. Define What Makes You Smile
Think what are you thinking about when you smile? What is it that makes you happy? Think about these things and then think about what you could do regularly that would tap into these areas. If you get a huge amount of enjoyment from watching a certain sport maybe you could do something more with that, could you find a passion in learning to play or coach that sport? Maybe you could but you will only find out if you get out there and give it a go.
3. Look At Where You Spend Your Time
Be very conscious about where you spend your time and how that time makes you feel. Are all the area’s where you spend your time bringing you great happiness and a feeling of fulfilment? Chances are probably not but maybe some are. Think about those things that are making you happy and try to understand why this is, then you can do more of these things. Where you possibly can, stop doing the things that are not bringing you happiness.
4. Understand What Excites and Inspires You
What are those things that really excite and inspire you? There will always be something, maybe a dream or even a goal. Define what these things are for you and then get out there and do them. Pursuing you passions in life is a critical element of doing what you love.
5. Go Out & Try Something New
If you’re really not sure where to start in finding what you love in life just get out there and try some different things. Even when you don’t know what you want you will be able to come up with some ideas of things that interest or excite you. Maybe learning to pilot or to climb, whatever it is get out there and give it a go. You might discover what you love and if you don’t at least you’ll have no regrets.
6. Understand What Drives You
What gets you out of the bed in the morning and into work? You may love what you do or parts of it but even when we do things that we don’t enjoy there has to be a driving force “why”. Think about what motivates you in your life and your life’s purpose and passion may well lie in and around this.
7. Ask Someone Who Knows You
Ask someone who knows you well what do they think you might like? When do they see you at your happiest and what do they think your unique talents and strengths are? Only you can define what you love in life but it can’t hurt to get an external perspective; especially from someone who knows you well. It’s amazing the things that others pick up on about us that we can sometimes miss ourselves.
8. Visualise Your Best Life
If you could redraw your life exactly as you wanted it how would it look? Try visualising yourself happy and content and then reflect on what was different? Define how your best life differs from your current position and what things you could do to move closer to a life that truly inspires and excites you.
