You don’t have to be a die-hard chair fan to know that the Eames lounge chair has graced the interiors of countless magnificent homes over the years. If you do a Google image search for “midcentury modern design,” you’ll find the iconic silhouette in a variety of frames.

But now that my new roommate has moved in, I’ve discovered a new hobby: sitting in it just to sit in it. It’s incredible.

Is it Long-Lasting in a Modern Home?

What is it that you rarely see in photos of homes with a lounge and ottoman? There are children and dogs running around. And I understand: spills and drool on a grown-up piece of furniture like this make me nervous. But it also appears to be well-built enough to withstand it, and it’s soft enough that tripping over it won’t hurt anyone too much.

Care, like most things, is entirely up to you, though Herman Miller does recommend annual adjustments and cleanings. They mostly recommend using specific cleaners for the upholstery and occasionally tightening some bolts. Finally, the leather upholstery feels sturdy and attractive with a little patina (the seat and ottoman cushions are also interchangeable, with the idea that even wear can be created between the two). However, if you get something like mohair, keep in mind that dog, kid, or takeout stains may be more difficult to remove.
